You're out there doing science yet you are, for the most part, removed from the political mess in the science community where folks have to fight for research dollars and lobby hard to persuade Congress on one issue or another. Near as I can tell (and others, via this Flickr pic), the beetle is genus Capnochroa in the Tenebrionidae family. Found it on the trail at Sapsucker Woods. It was quite friendly, posing and all :-).
